Some 2012 Triple Threads Relics - Ethier and Johnson

Every year Topps Triple Threads make some of the sickest relic and autograph cards. I haven't been fortunate enough to get my hands on any of those yet but hopefully soon.

I was on ebay looking for a couple of cards and came across a couple cards that were fairly cheap. I managed to win this Andre Ethier relic. It's just a simple relic with the shape of home plate. The card is numbered out of 27. The card also recognizes him playing in the 2010-2011 MLB All-Star games.

The second card I picked up on eBay a couple days later was a little different than the Ethier. This Josh Johnson relic was numbered out of 18 and the background color is different since it's a different number. This card is considered to be Emerald, while the Ethier is considered Sepia. It's been a while since Josh Johnson was a Cy Young candidate. Who remembers his dominance in April of 2011 when he won the NL Pitcher of the Month award? He was the favorite to win the Cy Young but an injury forced him to miss too much time. Luckily for me, Clayton Kershaw won it.

It's going to be tough to try and put some of these relic sets of my favorite players together. If you have any available, please send me an e-mail or leave me a comment.

Clayton Kershaw Wins 2012 Roberto Clemente Award

DETROIT, MI - Dodger pitcher Clayton Kershaw was named the recipient of the 2012 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet today at a press conference prior to Game Four of the World Series at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. The annual award pays tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. It is named for the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

“Major League Baseball is proud to present our most prestigious off-field honor, the Roberto Clemente Award, to Clayton Kershaw,” said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. “His accomplishments on the mound at such a young age are well known to baseball fans, but I am delighted that our game can shine a light on Clayton’s extraordinary efforts with his wife Ellen to make a difference in the lives of children in Zambia. Clayton Kershaw is a leader through his inspiring example, and he is a wonderful representation of the enduring, philanthropic spirit of Roberto Clemente.”

Clayton Kershaw and his wife, Ellen, founded Kershaw’s Challenge, a charitable organization that encourages people to make a difference by giving back to at-risk children and communities in need. The charity has provided assistance to a variety of organizations, including to its cornerstone charity, “Arise Africa,” which is helping the Kershaws build and sustain an orphanage for children in Lusaka, Zambia called “Hope’s Home.” In addition to providing a safe haven for orphans, Kershaw’s Challenge also seeks to create an emergency fund for the children, many of whom suffer from diseases and infections related to HIV and AIDS. Each year, Kershaw and his wife travel to the orphanage to visit with the children and bring awareness to this issue. He has also co-written a book with Ellen, released in January 2012, entitled, “Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself,” which is about their life together and trips to Africa. Money raised from the book’s proceeds goes directly to Kershaw’s Challenge for Hope’s Home. In addition to Hope’s Home, Kershaw’s Challenge has also supported the Peacock Foundation in Los Angeles, which provides animal-assisted interventions and activities for at-risk youth by partnering with mental health practitioners, public service agencies, and community organizations. Kershaw’s Challenge is also involved with Mercy Street in his hometown of Dallas, Texas, which provides mentoring, sports and recreation, vocational and educational opportunities to young people in at-risk communities. Kershaw has participated in numerous Dodgers’ community initiatives such as the offseason Community Caravan, a Habitat for Humanity Build, the distribution of back packs and school supplies to 1,000 underserved children and the annual Dodgers Dream Foundation Youth Baseball Camp.

“It is an incredible honor to receive this award,” said Kershaw. “Just being associated with someone like Roberto Clemente is truly humbling and I am extremely grateful.”

“I am happy to congratulate Clayton Kershaw on being named the recipient of this year’s Roberto Clemente Award,” said Vera Clemente. “The work that this young man has accomplished to help youth around the world is wonderful, and we are proud to welcome him among the many players who have carried on Roberto’s legacy.”

Kershaw is just the second Dodger to capture this prestigious award, joining Steve Garvey, who was the 1981 Roberto Clemente Award winner.

It's Been A While, Back Into Trading

It's been around 7 months since I've made a trade on Sports Card Forum. I don't have the time that I use to when I was just going to school and I was really into my card collection. As Summer came around, I no longer focused on my collection and didn't pay much attention to it.

I was finally able to sell my old relics and autographs that I've had for a couple of years. I was planning on setting up a new trade list with cards from newer products so it would be easier to trade. It's been very easy working with new people and trading for new cards that are going into my personal collection.

The first trade consist of a couple Matt Kemp relics and my first Robinson Cano bat. The Yankees are not my favorite team but Cano is one of my favorite players. I love his swing after he makes contact and who remembers the rumor about the Dodgers trading Matt Kemp for Robinson Cano a couple years ago?

I was also able to trade for a Leon Landry Autograph. He's no longer in the Dodgers organization because he was traded to the Seattle Mariners for Brandon League this past season.

The card that I was really glad to add to my collection was from another trade I made on SCF. I traded away a Ryan Mathews autograph that I won a couple months ago in a contest. I was able to flip it for a sweet Josh Johnson By The Letter Autograph. It's only numbered out of 27!

If you have any Dodgers or other players I collect, please check out my Trade List so we can get a deal done. Thanks for the look!

UCLA to Unveil John Wooden Statue

Press Release from UCLA:

UCLA will unveil a statue of legendary men's basketball coach John Wooden on the North Plaza outside New Pauley Pavilion on Friday, Oct. 26, at 2:30 p.m. (PDT). Several members of the Wooden family, as well as members of the Pauley family, will be on hand for the unveiling.

The bronze statue was made possible by a generous donation from longtime UCLA Athletics benefactors Jim and Carol Collins. It was designed and sculpted by Blair Buswell of Pleasant Grove, Utah, who has created many pieces depicting famous sports figures.

"The statue is a monument to a man who touched countless lives and showed us what it means to lead with integrity, humility, compassion and commitment," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said. "The legacy of the late Coach Wooden transcends athletics, our campus and the local community. I speak for many when I say with pride that his image will forever grace the main entrance to Pauley Pavilion."

Movie Review: Trouble With the Curve

If there's one thing I enjoy, it's baseball and that's exactly why Trouble With The Curve was a movie I had to see. I went to the theater expecting the worst because I didn't want to be disappointed again like when I saw Fever Pitch. I had a feeling Trouble With The Curve was going to focus a lot on the personal story between Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams.

Trouble With The Curve follows a scout named Gus Lobel (Clint Eastwood), who has worked for the Atlanta Braves organization for over 30 years. He's been one of the best scouts for decades, but his contract is up in three months and the organization begins to question his judgement. He's not finding the same talent he found 20 years ago and the Braves want to find someone younger to replace Gus.

The hottest prospect in baseball is about to enter the draft and the Braves might have an opportunity to draft him. The Braves want Gus to think about retirement but he refuses even with his bad eye sight. One of Gus'close friends in the organization turns to Gus' daughter, Mickey (Amy Adams), to help out. She works as an associate for an Atlanta law firm and has the opportunity to become a partner but she puts that her own career aside to try and save her father's career.

The movie focuses on their life in the past and why Gus did what he did. He wanted the best for his daughter and they spend a lot of time together on a road trip to see the next big thing in baseball. Along the way, they run into Johnny Flanagan (Justin Timberlake), a former major league pitcher who now scouts for the Boston Redsox. He has a tough choice when the MLB draft comes around and Gus gives him some advice.

----------

The movie was a little slow for me and there were certain parts where it became predictable. It was more about the family dynamic of Gus and Mickey. It was great to see those two grow closer together. In the end the audience finds out what "Trouble With the Curve" actually means. The film also gives a baseball fan a little side of the scouting profession. As a baseball fan, I can appreciate what most of those guys have to do everyday when they have to go watch a game and report back to their organizations.

Verdict: Wait to see it on DVD/ Blu-Ray

Movie Review: End of Watch

I'm not really into cop movies but for some reason I couldn't wait to see End of Watch. It features a couple of my favorite actors including Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, and Anna Kendrick.

End of Watch starts off by introducing us to two South Central police officers who are in pursuit of two suspects and ends in a shootout with both suspects being killed. Both officer Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and officer Zavala (Michael Pena) are cleared to return to work a couple weeks later.

The opening scene is giving a little taste of what to expect throughout the rest of the movie. I knew that there was going to be different points of view for this movie. Since officer Taylor was in a film making class when he returned to work, some parts of the movie were shot from his handheld camera. I didn't enjoy the movie going back and forth between the handheld camera and the 3rd person camera for the audience to get a better view of certain scenes.

They are forced to work into a new area located in South Central and stumble upon a bust that leads the two officers to something they weren't ready for. They are now wanted men and have a bounty over their heads.

End of Watch is not all about police duty though. There's a side plot about the personal life between officer Taylor and his girlfriend Janet (Anna Kendrick). We see how the two grow closer together throughout the film.

The thing I enjoyed about the movie the most was the humor side of it. There are a couple of parts when the officers are in the car together just talking to one another about their own personal lives and it gives the audience a little taste of what it's like to be an actual cop. It's not all serious business for them and they have fun once in a while. Gyllenhaal mentioned that they spent over five months and 50 ride alongs with LAPD and Inglewood PD for this role. They wanted to make it as realistic as possible and I believe they did a fine job.

---------

Overall, it was a great cop movie. There were some graphic parts but that's part of their jobs since they deal with criminals every single day. It was great being about to get a glimpse of what cops do daily and you gain a lot of respect for them. I know, it's not everyday they try to bust a drug cartel but the other little incidents throughout the movie are what I imagine happens. I will warn you though, you might cry at the end of the movie.

Verdict: Go see it in theaters.
