Dodgers Get their Magic Man

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Frank McCourt Announce Agreement With Guggenheim Baseball Management

I received the news last night during work and couldn't be happier. I'm glad that Magic Johnson's group will acquire the Dodgers. The only problem is Frank McCourt still has the Chavez Ravine property. At least he won't be the owner anymore and that's something, Dodger fans like myself, have been waiting for for a long time.

I've been hearing nothing but positive things about Guggenheim and the players seem excited.

Press Release from last night:
LOS ANGELES, March 27, 2012 - The Los Angeles Dodgers and Frank McCourt today announced an agreement under which Guggenheim Baseball Management LLC (“GBM”) will acquire the Los Angeles Dodgers for $2 billion upon completion of the closing process. The purchasing group includes Mark R. Walter as its controlling partner, as well as Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Peter Guber, Stan Kasten, Bobby Patton and Todd Boehly. Mr. McCourt and certain affiliates of the purchasers will also be forming a joint venture, which will acquire the Chavez Ravine property for an additional $150 million.
The Los Angeles Dodgers stated, “This transaction underscores the Debtors’ objective to maximize the value of their estate and to emerge from Chapter 11 under a successful Plan of Reorganization, under which all creditors are paid in full.”
Frank McCourt stated, “This agreement with Guggenheim reflects both the strength and future potential of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and assures that the Dodgers will have new ownership with deep local roots, which bodes well for the Dodgers, its fans and the Los Angeles community. We are delighted that this group will continue the important work we have started in the community, fulfilling our commitment to building 50 Dream Fields and helping with the effort to cure cancer.”
Earvin "Magic" Johnson stated, "I am thrilled to be part of the historic Dodger franchise and intend to build on the fantastic foundation laid by Frank McCourt as we drive the Dodgers back to the front page of the sports section in our wonderful community of Los Angeles."

Topps Signs Cuban Star Cespedes to Autograph Deal

Topps is pleased to announce that it has signed Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to an autograph trading card deal.

Cespedes will make his first appearance on an Autographed Rookie Card in 2012 in the highly-anticipated Bowman Baseball…but with a twist.

Randomly inserted into packs are three limited “Bowman Lucky Redemptions”. Cespedes is now designated as Lucky Redemption # 1. Cespedes will have an unsigned Rookie Card in the product as well.

In addition, the Cuban phenom is slated to sign autographs in Tier One, Allen & Ginter, Bowman Platinum, Topps Finest, Topps Chrome and more.

Cespedes, a rare five-tool player, starred for the silver medal winning Cuban National Team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and was named to the All-WBC team.

Just a couple weeks ago, Topps exclusively signed Yu Darvish. Topps is doing a great job trying to score the upper edge on big name international players.

Topps & Panini America Offer First Glimpses of Quarterbacks in their New Uniforms

Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Broncos a couple days ago, which then led to the Denver Broncos trading Tim Tebow to the New York Jets.

I'm not a big fan of photo-shopped cards but it's best for card companies to do in order to have these players in their new uniforms before the season starts. ESPN had an article on the new Topps trading cards.

Both Tebow and Manning will be featured in their new uniforms with Topps first 2012 release…Bowman Football. With each card being produced in limited quantity, these two already-collectible players are sure to make the all-new Bowman Football a must-have product.

Topps & Panini America also released images of their newest Tim Tebow card.

Which cards are better? Topps Bowman or Panini Prestige?

Dodger Stadium Express Shuttle Returns

Dodger Stadium Express will return for fourth season

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers and Metro will once again offer Dodger Stadium Express bus service from Union Station to Dodger Stadium this season through a grant approved by the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC). Service will begin on April 3 before the Dodgers’ exhibition game against the Angels and continue throughout the season.

For the third consecutive year, a grant of $300,000 was awarded to Metro by the MSRC in support of clean fuel transit service to link Union Station to Dodger Stadium. Funding under the grant will be used to offset the cost of fares on the Dodger Stadium Express bus service for passengers possessing a Dodgers ticket. Dodger game tickets will be honored as fare payment to ride the bus service and those without a ticket will pay the regular one-way fare of $1.50.

Last year, the Dodger Stadium Express bus service transported more than 116,000 fans with 68 percent of those riders using public transportation from their place of origin to get to Union Station to take advantage of the special bus service to the games.

The Dodger Stadium Express will pick up fans at the Patsaouras Bus Plaza adjacent to the east portal of Union Station and continue to Dodger Stadium via Sunset Blvd. and Cesar Chavez Avenue. Passengers will be dropped off and picked up in Dodger Stadium’s parking lot G in center field. Service will start 90 minutes prior to the beginning of the games and will end 45 minutes after the end of the game. Shuttles will run every 10 minutes before the game and run approximately every 30 minutes after the game starts.

Metro will deploy state-of-the-art 40-foot clean burning compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, as MSRC funding is awarded within the South Coast Air Basin from a portion of the vehicle registration fee set aside for mobile source projects that result in emission reductions. The Dodger Stadium Express bus service will be provided by Veolia Transportation under contract to Metro.

Patrons are encouraged to use the many transportation alternatives that serve Union Station and will connect them to the Dodger Stadium Express. For specific route and schedule information visit More information about the Dodger Stadium Express can also be found at

This is a nice alternative to get to the stadium. I believe parking was raised to $20.

Mailday - Andre Ethier SPx Autograph

2008 SPx Andre Ethier Autograph

I received my newest Andre Ethier autograph. It's the sixth one in my collection.

This was a simple trade and only had to give up a Donovan Tate autograph that I won from a contest a couple months ago. It's always nice to flip contest prizes for a PC card. When I was making the trade, I assumed that I was going to receive a duplicate Ethier autograph. The only information I had about the card was that it was a SPx autograph.

This is the 2007 SPx autograph that I already had in my collection. I was pleased to see that my newest addition was from a different year.

Andre Ethier has been killing it this Spring Training. Let's hope it continues into the regular season. After all it's his contract year.

Dodger Stadium Celebrates 50th Anniversary Season in 2012

Dodger fans can vote for their favorite Dodgers’ moment at

LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles Dodgers’ Hall of Famer and Special Advisor to the Chairman Tommy Lasorda said it best when he described Dodger Stadium as “Blue Heaven on Earth.”

Dodger Stadium, overlooking downtown Los Angeles, is as beautiful as ever 50 years after its debut.  To mark that occasion, the Dodgers during the 2012 season will celebrate the great moments and individuals that have played major roles in the success of one of the most storied franchises in sports history.

The Dodger Stadium 50th Anniversary presented by State Farm logo features a panoramic view of the stadium's famed multi-colored seating decks. Traditional Dodger Blue is complemented by the building's mid-century modern color palette, while the gold banner and lettering signify the stadium’s Golden Anniversary. The points on the sunburst each represent a Major League Baseball ballpark opened and closed for baseball use during the 50-year life span of Dodger Stadium.  The logo will appear as badges on the Dodger uniforms during the 2012 season.

The Dodgers will commemorate this milestone extensively throughout the 2012 season with interactive elements including a newly-designed website, fan vote for the greatest moments in Dodger Stadium history, Dodger Stadium’s 50th Anniversary FanFest presented by State Farm, the remarkable Dodger Stadium Greats Bobblehead Series and limited edition commemorative merchandise.

Dodger fans can vote for their favorite moments in Dodger Stadium history by visiting  Results will be revealed starting in June with the top moment announced on October 3.

Four world championships, nine National League pennants and countless excitement and thrills directed for a majority of the 50 years by two Hall of Fame skippers—Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda—and every season described by two legendary Hall of Fame announcers, Vin Scully and Jaime Jarrin.

It seems like only yesterday, when Dodger Stadium was built and opened to a capacity crowd on April 10, 1962, as the Dodgers took on the Cincinnati Reds.  Since then, some 143,826,220 fans have passed through the turnstiles during the regular season and another 3,020,043 attended post-season games.  The Dodgers have surpassed the three million mark in attendance 25 times with the highest mark coming in 2007 at 3,857,036.

Dodger fans across the country and throughout the world have their cherished memories of the past 50 years.  The 50th Anniversary of Dodger Stadium presented by State Farm will recognize numerous great moments and stars throughout the 2012 season, including:

·         Kirk Gibson’s walk-off pinch-hit home run in game 1 of the 1988 World Series enroute to the Dodgers’ World Championship.
·         The Dodgers sweep of the New York Yankees in the 1963 World Series
·         Pitching greats Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale.  Koufax with his perfect game against the Cubs on Sept. 9, 1965 and Drysdale setting the MLB record with a streak of 58.2 scoreless innings in 1968.
·         Maury Wills stealing a Major League record 104 bases in 1962.
·         Willie and Tommy Davis.  Tommy winning a second consecutive N.L. batting title in 1963 and Willie setting a then Dodger record in hitting in 31 consecutive games in 1969.
·         Rick Monday.  As an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs in 1976, Monday saved the American flag from burning and as an outfielder for the Dodgers, hitting a home run in the 1981 League Championship Series in Montreal to send the Dodgers to the World Series and an eventual championship over the New York Yankees.
·         Tommy Lasorda assuming the managerial reins in 1976 following the 23-year tenure of Hall of Famer Walter Alston and going on to blaze his own Hall of Fame trail.
·         Oldtimers Days remembering Dodger greats and the uniform ceremony in 1972 when the numbers of Sandy Koufax (32), Roy Campanella (39) and Jackie Robinson (42) were retired.
·         “Fernandomania” hits L.A. as rookie Fernando Valenzuela wins his first eight starts in 1981.
·         Dodger foursomes—the infield of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey are the longest foursome to play together in MLB history at more than eight years.  And the quartet of Garvey, Cey, Reggie Smith and Dusty Baker becomes the first foursome to hit 30 or more home runs in 1977.  Baker makes it a foursome on the last day of the season.
·         Orel Hershiser breaks Don Drysdale’s record for consecutive scoreless innings at 59 in 1988.

The aforementioned is just a small sampling of the great moments and individuals to be recognized for their contributions to the first 50 years of Dodger Stadium.

There were other iconic moments that involved baseball, music, basketball, boxing and The Pope.

The 1980 All-Star game was played at Dodger Stadium and the stadium played host to the Olympic Baseball tournament in 1984.

Dodger Stadium has played host to many of the greatest stars of music beginning with the legendary Beatles in 1966, The Three Tenors in 1994, Elton John in 1975, the late Michael Jackson in 1984 and many more.  In addition to musical stars, The Pope celebrated mass at Dodger Stadium in 1987.  The venue also welcomed the Harlem Globetrotters for an exhibition basketball game in 1964 and it was also the site of a championship boxing match in 1963.

Another chapter in the rich history of Dodgers great moments and the list of memories will be added in 2012.

Mailday - Cleveland Indians Bobbleheads

It's been a while since I traded cards online. I didn't have much time with my seasonal job and a new semester of school beginning. Now that I have some free time, I can get back to adding cards to my collection.

The only difference for this trade was instead of receiving cards in the mail, I received two new bobbleheads for my collection. They were stadium giveaways from the Cleveland Indians the past couple of years.
  • Mike Hargrove 2011 Cleveland Indians 'Human Rain Delay' Bobblehead
  • Kenny Lofton 2010 Cleveland Indians 'The Catch' Bobblehead
As you can see in the picture at the top, the Mike Hargrove is a lot bigger than the Kenny Lofton bobblehead. I mainly wanted the Kenny Lofton and the Hargrove was just a throw in for the trade.

Hargrove played in the 70s & 80s, which was before my time so I don't know much about him. His nickname was 'Human Rain Delay' because of how much time he took to get ready in between pitches. The bobblehead  shows him fixing his batting gloves and he apparently took forever to get ready.

One of my favorite players growing up was Kenny Lofton. He was one of the best center fielders during the 1990s along side Ken Griffey Jr. He appeared in six consecutive All-Star games and won four consecutive Gold Gloves. This bobblehead portrays 'The Catch' that happened on August 4th, 1996.
B.J. Surhoff of the Baltimore Orioles hit a fly ball deep into center field. It was headed out, but the acrobatic gloveman timed his leap perfectly, and while he was shoulder-high with the top of the fence, he reached over it and grabbed the ball as it was coming down into home run territory. - Wikipedia (Kenny Lofton)
Lofton played for my hometown Dodgers in 2006 and later returned to the Cleveland Indians a few years later. In 2010, he was inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame.

Los Angeles Galaxy Championship Ring

The Los Angeles Galaxy received their 2011 Championship rings before today's match against D.C. United at the Home Depot Center.

Here's a look at Landon Donovan's ring that was shared on the Galaxy Facebook page.

They look amazing. The Galaxy logo is on the top of the ring with small diamonds that spell out LA Galaxy. It has their last name on one of the sides along with the MLS Cup logo. On the other side of the ring, it says LA Galaxy with the MLS logo.
