Preview: 2012 Topps Baseball Series 2

2012 Topps Series 2 Baseball images were released yesterday on the Topps facebook page.

To see the entire album: Click Here

There were a couple of Los Angeles Dodgers featured.

2012 Topps Series 2 Cut Above Jackie Robinson

An insert card featuring some legends and there are a couple of Cut Above autographs featuring Ryan Braun from the Milwaukee Brewers.

2012 Topps Series 2 Golden Moments Jumbo Memorabilia 30/40 Club

A sick jumbo memorabilia card, where Topps also mentions the patch is game-used. I'm glad that Matt Kemp's 30/40 season isn't going unnoticed by Topps. This is one card I would love to see in person.

2012 Topps Series 2 Career Day Sandy Koufax Autograph

I've been seeing a lot more Koufax autographs in Topps products. The card would be a lot better if it was on card but I know Koufax likes to be a private guy so it's tough.

Mailday - Tony Dungy Autograph

8x10 Autograph

A couple of months ago, I sent an autograph request to Tony Dungy.

He was the first African-American Head Coach to win a Super Bowl and now works for NBC on Sunday Nights. I followed his career since his days in Tampa Bay before Jon Gruden took over. He's one of the greatest head coaches during my lifetime and when I saw that he autographed photos for his fans, I had to take advantage. To learn more information, find coaching courses at accredited online schools that can teach you how to be a world class coach just like Tony Dungy.

I sent my request for an autograph back on October 10th and received an e-mail from his Foundation a month later. When I checked the mail today, I wasn't expecting to receive anything from Dungy. I forget about the request and just figured that I wasn't going to receive it.

Thanks Tony!

UFC 141 Predictions

The biggest fight of the year is happening tonight live on PPV. Save the best for last!

The main event includes two heavyweight monsters looking for a shot at Junior Dos Santos and his heavyweight title. Donald Cerrone is looking for his fifth win on the year! It's very rare to see someone fight five times in a year and win all of their fights.

December 30, 2011
7:00 PM PST
MGM Grand Garden Arena
Las Vegas, NV

Main Card
Lesnar vs Overeem
The winner of this fight becomes the #1 contender for the heavyweight title. Winner will face Junior Dos Santos and the loser will most likely face Cain Velasquez. I believe Lesnar will try to take this to the ground and defeat Overeem with a submission. If they stay standing, then the edge goes to Overeem who is an excellent striker.

Prediction: Brock Lesnar

Diaz vs Cerrone
Donald Cerrone has been phenomenal in 2011. He has a Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night and Knockout of the Night honor in 3 separate fights this year. He's 4-0 this year and I'm expecting a knockout against Diaz, especially after what happened at the press conference. Don't piss off the Cowboy!

Prediction: Donald Cerrone

Fitch vs Hendricks
This could be the fight of the night. Fitch hasn't fought since February and had to deal with a shoulder injury but says he's back to 100 percent. He was in line for a shot at Georges St-Pierre but had to back out because of the injury. I expect this one to go the distance.

Prediction: Jon Fitch

For the rest of the fight card, visit the UFC 141 website. Facebook fights start at 3:50 PM PST and SpikeTV  prelims airs at 6 PM PST.

Who do you think will win tonight?

December Mail - Clayton Kershaw, Jerry West, Chris Paul & 2011 Topps Chrome Blaster

It's been a while since I posted additions to my card collection. I haven't really added that much but there are a couple of gems. I also received a 2011 Topps Chrome Blaster from my Godparents as a Christmas present. It's always fun opening a blaster.

I'll start off with the additions to my personal collection.

The 2011 National League Cy Young Winner

Topps Triple Threads is one of my favorite products because of their designs. There are only 18 of these bad boys made. Since it's a high-end product, it's very rare that I'm able to add cards from this product to my collection. Thanks to Woody for the easy trade.

The Logo Man himself, Jerry West. My first jersey card of the hall of famer. I assumed the card wasn't numbered when I traded for it, but then when I saw the back of the card it showed that only 50 were made. That was a nice surprise.

Bought this awesome Roddy White patch for the Falcons collection. There are two different pieces with one being two colors and the other one is three colors. The card is numbered to 100.

My third Josh Johnson autograph. It's my first rookie autograph of Johnson. It's not numbered but always nice to get an autograph of my favorite pitcher not on the Dodgers. I hope he can stay healthy next season because he has a shot at winning a Cy Young.

I picked up this Allen Webster autograph along with the Josh Johnson. I gave up Bowman Chrome cards of  Yoennis Cespedes & Yu Darvish. I don't follow the Dodgers prospects as much as I should but according to the Dodgers website, Webster was the #2 prospect in the organization behind Zach Lee.

Contest Wins (Tradebait)

I won a couple of contest on SCF and CCW. All of these cards are available for trade, if you need them just let me know.
The newest Clipper, Chris Paul jersey card. It's numbered out of 100.
Miguel Cabrera and Todd Helton dual jersey card. It's numbered out of 99.
World Series Champion, Jon Jay autograph.
Angel Castillo is a minor league player in the Angels organization.

2011 Topps Chrome Blaster

Here's what I pulled from the 2011 Topps Chrome Blaster that I received as a Christmas Present.

I pulled a couple of nice rookies including Freddie Freeman, Brandon Beachy and Aroldis Chapman.

A total of nine inserts were pulled in the blaster. The Topps Chrome Heritage Buster Posey on the bottom right is numbered out of 1962 and the Purple Adrian Beltre is numbered out of 499. I was very happy when I pulled the Strasburg in the first pack.

Thanks for the read. If you're interested in anything, e-mail me or leave a comment.

Kings Hire Darryl Sutter as Head Coach

From the Kings Press Release:

LOS ANGELES –
The Los Angeles Kings have named Darryl Sutter as the club’s new head coach, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Sutter will begin his head coaching duties with the Kings when they take the ice for practice this Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo.

Following practice the Kings will hold a news conference featuring Lombardi and Sutter with the news conference slated to begin at 1 p.m. It will be streamed live by Kings Vision on LAKings.com and will be hosted by Bob Miller.

Sutter – formerly the head coach of the Calgary Flames, San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks -- replaces Terry Murray as the club’s head coach as Sutter becomes the 24th head coach in Kings history. Murray coached the Kings the past three-plus seasons and was relieved of his duties on December 12. John Stevens has assumed the duties of interim head coach the past four games.

The 53-year-old Sutter has a career head coaching record of 409-320-131 in 860 regular season games. He’s tied for 27th among all-time NHL head coaches in games (seventh among active coaches) and is tied for 24th all-time among NHL head coaches in wins (seventh among active coaches). Sutter’s teams have eclipsed the 40-win mark four times, 100 points twice and his clubs have finished in first place three times. He is also only one of nine head coaches in NHL history to lead three different teams to 100 wins. Only Scotty Bowman and Ron Wilson have coached four different teams to 100 wins.

Sutter’s teams have qualified for the postseason 10 of his 11 seasons. He led Calgary to Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals and Chicago to the 1995 Western Conference Finals. Overall he has a 47-54 record in 101 career postseason games. He’s tied for 19th all-time among NHL head coaches in playoff games (fifth among active coaches) and is tied for 24th all-time among NHL head coaches in playoff wins (tied for sixth among active coaches).

Sutter was previously the general manager of the Flames and he held that position from the 2003-04 season until he resigned on December 28, 2010. Sutter also served as Calgary’s head coach from 2002-03 through 2005-06 (he held dual roles as head coach and general manager from 2003-04 through 2005-06).

As the head coach of the Flames for three seasons, Sutter compiled a 107-73-30 record in the regular season and an 18-15 record in the postseason. The Flames increased their point total all three seasons he was head coach. He led Calgary to the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals and a first-place finish in the Northwest Division in 2005-06, when the Flames finished with a 46-25-11 record (103 points). On July 12, 2006, Sutter stepped down as Calgary’s head coach to focus solely on his GM duties.

Sutter was the head coach of the Sharks for parts of six seasons (1997-98 through the start of the 2002-03 season), where he worked under Lombardi, then the General Manager of the Sharks. Sutter was 192-167-75 in the regular season and 18-24 in the playoffs during his time in San Jose. Like Calgary, the Sharks increased their point total every season Sutter was the head coach. He led San Jose to a first-place finish in the Pacific Division in 2001-02 with a 44-27-11 record (99 points). Sutter was relieved of his duties with the Sharks on December 1, 2002.

Sutter was the head coach of the Blackhawks for three seasons (1992-93 through the shortened 1994-95 lockout season) and served as Chicago’s assistant coach in 1987-88 and as associate coach in 1990-91 and 1991-92. As the Blackhawks head coach he compiled a 110-80-26 record in the regular season and an 11-15 record in the postseason. He led Chicago to a first-place finish in the Norris Division -- and the best record in the Campbell Conference -- in 1992-93 with a 47-25-12 record (106 points). The following season he led Chicago to the Western Conference Finals.

Sutter’s head coaching experience also includes two seasons in the International Hockey League, where he coached the Saginaw Hawks in 1988-89 and he led the Indianapolis Ice to the Turner Cup Championship in 1989-90.

As an NHL left wing, Sutter played in 406 career NHL regular season games (all with the Blackhawks), recording 279 points (161-118=279) and 288 penalty minutes. He scored 20-plus goals in five of his eight NHL seasons, including a career-high 40 goals in 1980-81. Sutter, who served as Chicago’s team captain from 1982-85 and again from 1986-87, also had 43 points (24-19=43) and 26 penalty minutes in 51 playoff games.

Darryl is one of seven Sutter brothers, six of whom played in the NHL. His son Brett currently plays in the Carolina Hurricanes organization.

Sutter will be behind the Kings bench on Thursday when the Kings host the Ducks at STAPLES Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on FS West and AM 1150.

Vanessa Bryant Files For Divorce From Kobe

Kobe is frustrated with the Lakers and now his divorce is public. Not a good week for Kobe Bryant. He lost his teammate, Lamar Odom, and now he's losing his wife.

No PRENUP!

Kobe Bryant's wife has filed for divorce ... TMZ has learned.

Vanessa Bryant filed legal docs Friday afternoon, citing "irreconcilable differences."
Sources connected with the couple tell TMZ ... Vanessa -- who stuck by Kobe after he was charged with sexually assaulting a Colorado woman in 2003 -- decided to end the marriage because she believes Kobe has been unfaithful ... again.
As one source puts it, "She's been dealing with these incidents for a long time and has been a faithful wife, but she's finally had enough," adding, "This one is the straw that broke the camel's back."
And our sources say ... Kobe "desperately" wants to win Vanessa back and will do "whatever it takes" to save their 10 1/2 year marriage.
According to the legal docs, Vanessa is asking for joint custody of their 2 daughters -- 8-year-old Natalia and 5-year-old Giana -- but Vanessa is asking that Kobe get visitation rights, which means she wants the kids in her care most of the time.
We've learned the couple has NO PRENUP, so 29-year-old Vanessa is entitled to half of the empire Kobe built over the last decade.
She's also requesting spousal support ... which is typical in divorce cases. Kobe, who filed his response to the divorce minutes after Vanessa filed her petition, says he will pay her spousal support.
According to the docs, Vanessa is being repped by disso-queen Laura Wasser and attorney Samantha Klein. Wasser reps oodles of celebs, including Britney Spears,Angelina Jolie, Maria Shriver and Kim Kardashian.
Kobe went to the Jay-Z concert Tuesday night in L.A. without Vanessa, and people who saw him there say he looked miserable.
Vanessa signed the divorce petition on December 1. Kobe signed his response on December 7.
Oh yeah, that $4 million ring Kobe gave Vanessa after the 2003 scandal .... It's all hers. A gift is a gift.
The Bryants released a joint statement ... saying they have "resolved all issues" privately, with the assistance of counsel.

Which Chris Paul Offer Was Better - Lakers or Clippers?

I'm still a little mad about David Stern vetoing the trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers last weekend. After taking a closer look at the deal, I understand why it wasn't good for the Hornets. They needed to have a younger core that would be more appealing to a new owner.

The vetoed trade did cost the Lakers their 6th man of the year. I guess Lamar Odom forgot this was a business and that the Lakers can package him in a deal to land a superstar. He nearly left the Lakers in 2009 when he almost signed with the Miami Heat. So instead of trading Odom for Chris Paul, the Lakers get a trade exemption. Pau Gasol was professional about the whole situation and is probably going to be with the Lakers this Christmas.

The Hornets need to rebuild because they aren't going to be competitive with the top teams in the NBA. Losing your best player is going to hurt a franchise and it's tough trying to trade for equal value that would help the team right away. I witnessed it with the Lakers when they traded Shaq to the Miami Heat. The Lakers were able to trade for a couple of young players but it set them back a couple seasons. This is why the Hornets couldn't go through with the Lakers offer. They were getting veteran players that would help maintain their middle of the Western Conference status, but in the end would just put the new owner in some financial trouble.

The Hornets were losing David West to a new team and they would have to give up their center, Emeka Okafor, in order for the Lakers deal to work. Luis Scola would of been their center to start the year. Scola's contract is horrendous. Lamar Odom is a great player, but he's getting up there in age and he hasn't been asked to be the star of the team since he was on the Heat.

Chris Paul to the Lakers
Now here's the deal that David Stern vetoed for the Hornets:

Lamar Odom (age 32): $8.2 million this year; team option for $8.9 million next year
Kevin Martin (age 28): $12 million this year; $12.9 million next year
Luis Scola (age 31): $8.5 million this year; $9.4 million next year; $10.2 million in the year after; $11 million in 2014-2015
Goran Dragic (age 25): $2.1 million this year, expiring contract
New York 1st round pick: Top 5 team in the East, in the 20s.

Chris Paul to the Clippers
Here's the deal that David Stern allowed for the Hornets:

Eric Gordon (age 22): $3.8 million this year; $5.1 million qualifying option next year
Al-Farouq Aminu (age 21): $5.7 million over the next two years, then a team option the year after
Chris Kaman (age 29): $12 million this year, expiring contract
Minnesota 1st round pick: Most likely a lottery pick, top 10

The Clippers deal is perfect for a team that wants to start rebuilding. They get two players under the age of 22 and an expiring contract worth over $12 million that will be a nice chunk of money they can take off the books next off-season. They are also receiving the Minnesota 1st round pick that will most likely be in the top 10, unless Ricky Rubio is the answer for that young team.

Eric Gordon is a nice pick-up for the Hornets and i'm sure every Clipper fan is disappointed they couldn't keep Gordon instead of Eric Bledsoe. The Hornets were able to keep Emeka Okafor as their center.

If you were a potential buyer for the New Orlean Hornets, which team would you have wanted?

Chris Paul Coming To Los Angeles Afterall - Traded To Clippers

Chris Paul is finally getting his wish. The Clippers traded away Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, and a 1st round pick.

The Clippers did give up a lot for Paul but it's worth it. In my opinion, he's the best point guard in the game right now. Eric Gordon is a great player that not many people know about since he played with the Clippers the past couple of seasons. I have a feeling that the 1st round pick will be top 5 next off-season.

But now, the Clippers have a scary combo with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul.

They also have too many point guards and lack a shooting guard. There are a total of five point guards on the roster right now: Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups, Mo Williams, Eric Bledsoe, & Randy Foye. I would think they could package two of them for a nice shooting guard.

Marc Stein from ESPN reports:
The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a deal in principle with the league-owned New Orleans Hornets to acquire guard Chris Paul, according to sources close to the process.
The Clippers, sources said, will send guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets for Paul.
The Clippers will also receive two future second-round picks, according to sources.
The deal is expected to be approved by the league Wednesday night, sources said.

UCLA Hires Jim Mora

Not really what I was hoping for but he's a guy who won't take any BS from any his players. Jim Mora was the head coach of my Atlanta Falcons in 2004 and was fired 3 years later. He only had one good season and that was because his QB was Michael Vick.

Former NFL head coaches usually fail in college because they aren't use to recruiting. Let's see which recruits he can bring in next season.

Peter Yoon of ESPNLosAngeles reports:

LOS ANGELES -- Jim L. Mora will be named football coach at UCLA Saturday, a source close to the situation told ESPNLosAngeles.com.

Mora, the former coach of the Seattle Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons, is currently an analyst for the NFL network. He replaces Rick Neuheisel, who was fired after going 21-29 during his four years with the Bruins.

Mora, whose father Jim briefly served as an assistant a UCLA, has little college coaching experience. He was a graduate assistant at Washington, where he played defensive back, in 1984.

He spent most of his career in the NFL, most recently as the head coach of the Seahawks in the 2009. He was fired after going 5-11 in his only season. He was the assistant head coach for two seasons prior.

Before joining Seattle, Mora served as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for 2004-2006. In his first season with Atlanta, the Falcons went 11-5 and made it to the NFC championship game. His teams went 8-8 and 7-9 the next two seasons and he was fired.

Mora, 50, began his NFL career as a quality control assistant with the San Diego Chargers in 1985. He took over as secondary coach in 1989 and left to join his father with the New Orleans Saints in 1992. He moved to the San Francisco 49ers in 1997 and became the 49ers defensive coordinator in 1999 under Steve Mariucci.

Reeves Nelson Dismissed From UCLA Basketball Team

Ben Howland is finally doing something right this season. After suspending Reeves Nelson for a second time this season, UCLA decided to dismiss him from the team.

Nelson was outstanding for the Bruins last season, but his attitude became a huge problem. I believe it has something to do with the Wear brothers taking some of his playing time.

Here's a tweet from Nelson after the news broke out:

Gary Parrish from CBSSports reports
Reeves Nelson was dismissed from the UCLA basketball team on Friday, a source told CBSSports.com.
An official announcement is expected soon.
Nelson was UCLA's best player, but he's been a problem throughout his career because of his inability to be a decent teammate. The 6-foot-8 forward was suspended Tuesday for the second time this season after being benched during last weekend's loss to Texas. Coach Ben Howland had previously given Nelson countless opportunities to correct his attitude but nothing ever changed. Consequently, the junior who received All-American consideration in the preseason is now off the team and free to transfer into another program that might be willing to take a troubled-but-gifted prospect.
Nelson averaged 13.9 points and 9.1 rebounds in 31.3 minutes per game last season.
He was averaging 5.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19.3 minutes per game this season.
UCLA is 2-5 with its lone wins coming aganst Chaminade and Pepperdine.
The Bruins play Penn on Saturday.

Dan Gilbert E-mails David Stern Regarding Chris Paul Trade

Chris Paul and Lamar Odom are both very upset. It sounds like neither of them will be reporting to camp tomorrow. The NBA killed the deal because of basketball reasons but there are speculations that most of the owners were upset with this deal.

I don't see why everyone is saying this is a lop-sided deal. The Lakers are giving up Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol. That's 2/3 of their big men and leave them with a couple holes to fill.

This is the e-mail than Dan Gilbert sent to David Stern regarding the proposed deal that would send Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers. He's probably still mad that Lebron left him and his Cavaliers team won't be winning anything anytime soon. I wish he would have used Comic Sans.

Commissioner,
It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.
This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.
Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.
I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).
I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.
I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?
Please advise….
Dan G.

Lakers Close To Acquiring Chris Paul

Big news for the Los Angeles Lakers. They are close to acquiring all-star point guard, Chris Paul.

I've read that the Hornets will have to give up more than just Chris Paul in order to acquire some of the players from the Rockets. Emeka Okafor or Trevor Ariza could be a part of deal.

Definately a nice upgrade over Derek Fisher at the starting spot. Lakers had to give up two big men for Paul but if the Lakers are able to get Okafor, I would say that it's a win.

Is Dwight Howard coming to the Lakers next? I've been hoping for Dwight Howard since the end of April.

No more Khloe Kardashian and no more reality show for us Laker fans to worry about.

Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo reports:
The Los Angeles Lakers are nearing an agreement to acquire All-Star point guard Chris Paul in a three-team trade that will cost them Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Lakers are finalizing the trade with the New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets. Under the terms of the deal, the Lakers would send Gasol to the Rockets. The Hornets would receive Odom, Rockets guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and forward Luis Scola, league sources said.
“It’s not finalized, but we’re close,” one front-office official involved in the negotiations said.

Caron Butler Agrees To A Three-Year Deal With Clippers

Clippers sign Caron Butler for 3 years worth $24 million.

Nice signing for the Clippers, but Butler is coming off of major knee surgery. I didn't really like him when he was on the Lakers but he could be a good compliment piece for Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon.

------------------------------------

Ramona Shelburne from ESPNLA.com reports:

Former Dallas Mavericks forward Caron Butler agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract with Los Angeles Clippers Thursday, according to his agent Raymond Brothers.

Butler had also considered San Antonio, New Jersey and Chicago, but ultimately the opportunity to team with Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon in Los Angeles proved too enticing.

"He's very excited to be with Blake," Brothers said. "And very excited to be with a young upcoming team he believes he can help win a championship."

The Clippers had pursued both Butler and Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince this week. They only offered Prince a one-year deal, however, and he elected to re-sign with the Pistons on a four-year, $27 million deal.

Butler played just 29 games last season with the Mavs before rupturing the patellar tendon in his right knee on New Year's Day. He underwent major surgery, and despite exhaustive rehab, was unable to return for Dallas' championship run.

Mavs coaches and front office personnel consistently lauded Butler's effort to return and he believes his right knee is back to 100 percent.

Dallas, however, was reluctant to offer Butler anything more than a one-year contract, an approach the club seems to also be taking with its other free agents.
