In 2009, Manny failed his first drug test which resulted in a 50-game suspension as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
On the trading deadline in 2008, Manny had taken LA by storm. He made Dodgers into contenders overnight and arguably had one of the best 2nd half season ever.
I didn't care about his antics when he played for the Redsox. Once he was traded to the Dodgers, I was a supporter because he was on my favorite team.
I had only seen one Dodgers playoff victory my entire life before the 2008 season. Not only did the Dodgers win a playoff game, they swept the Chicago Cubs in the 2008 NLDS. The amazing run finally came to an end when the Philadelphia Phillies eliminated the Dodgers in the NLCS.
My favorite ManRam moment when he was a member of the Dodgers was on July 22, 2009.
My buddy invited me to this game. It happened to be Manny Ramirez Bobblehead night but he wasn't in the starting lineup.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, the pitcher's spot came up with bases loaded. Just watch what happened next.
It felt like a playoff game. Dodgers went on to win the game 6-2.
I knew Manny's time with the Dodgers was coming to an end in 2010. He even said it himself during Spring Training. I wasn't really expecting much from him and then he was traded to the Chicago White Sox. He was a better fit for an AL team because he couldn't play in the OF anymore.
It's sad to see one of the greatest hitters in my generation retire due to another failed drug test. He'll never make it to the Hall of Fame because of it. From reading what Manny is like as a person, I'm sure that doesn't matter to him.
I'll end this post with a couple of my favorite ManRam cards in my collection.
Thanks for the memories Manny!
